What Does a CMMC Consultant Do?

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program is how the Department of Defense verifies that contractors protect federal information. A CMMC consultant guides a company from its current security posture to one that can pass the assessment its contracts require.

What consultants help with

Most engagements start by defining scope: which people, systems, and locations handle Federal Contract Information (FCI) or Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI). From there the consultant measures current practices against the requirements, builds a remediation plan, and helps produce the documentation an assessor will ask for, including the System Security Plan.

Why contractors bring in help

Level 2 requires all 110 security requirements in NIST SP 800-171. Many small and mid-sized contractors do not have in-house staff with the time or background to interpret each requirement, configure systems, and collect evidence. CMMC requirements are being phased into DoD contracts, so waiting until a solicitation appears can leave too little time.

Common services

Typical offerings include gap assessments, readiness assessments, remediation, security documentation, managed compliance, and assessment preparation.

What a consultant cannot do

No consultant can issue a CMMC certification. A Level 2 certification assessment is carried out by a separate, authorized assessor. See RPO vs. C3PAO.
